About

Bill McCallion has been a paediatric surgeon for over three decades, a job that requires a passion to succeed, the compassion to deal with the most vulnerable in our society and the resilience to bounce back in the face of adversity. Bill has developed fascinating insights into the traits that identify successful leaders, particularly where the stakes are high and when the outcome, on many occasions, is the difference between life and death. Key to his role as a surgeon, Bill will explore the “art” of decision-making including the crucial relationship between benefit and risk.

A university academic, Bill has also had an active teaching role at Queen’s University Belfast. As a Senior Lecturer in children’s surgery, his dynamic lecture style motivated a generation of medical students and for years his lectures were rated as number 1 in the university’s Paediatrics and Child Health program. He has an impressive research background in surgery and is credited with over thirty publications and book chapters in peer reviewed medical journals and textbooks. He has also won several national and international awards for his research in children’s surgery.

In his role as university teacher and mentor Bill developed a formula aimed at guiding medical students towards success as they entered the physically and emotionally challenging work as newly qualified doctors. His formula, the “5 A’s of success”, as he illustrates, is as relevant in the boardroom of large corporations or for entrepreneurs in a new start-up as it is in the operating theatre. He explores the values of strong work ethic and emotional intelligence and probes the origins of these traits essential in any industry.

Resilience is a key to success in our personal and professional lives. Bill explores the neuroscience of resilience and, from his own experience, offers some insights for both personal and corporate well-being. A key to his long and very successful career has been job satisfaction. He explores the psychology and science behind team building and motivation and offers strategies on avoiding “blue Mondays”!

Bill’s talks are energetic and thought-provoking. Thoroughly engaging, his presentation style is a juxtaposition of drama, tragedy and yet comedic in equal measure. Feedback from organisations as diverse as universities to FTSE 100 companies has been unwaveringly positive.  In his spare time, Bill is a keen golfer and musician.
